🇺🇸 ALEXANDER NEEDS OUR HELP!

Dec 23, 2024

In mid-June 2024, the shelter team came across this wonderful dog by chance, and fortunately so. They named him Alexander. Alexander was in terrible shape. The dog was known in the neighbourhood - but no one did anything. He had hidden himself under a wall, in the grass.

The volunteers only saw a part of him and to their horror they saw that he was covered in worms - which were eating him alive. Of course, this dog had to go to the vet immediately! To be on the safe side, they put a muzzle on him, but he was very docile and cooperated very well. He turned out to be covered in wounds and maggots and was much too thin. You can watch his rescue film here

At the vet, he turned out to weigh only 34 kg. He should weigh at least 40 kilos. Alexander is estimated to be about 7 years old. The vet said he had been in this condition for 10-15 days and the heat had caused maggots to get into his wounds and eat his flesh. His wounds were caused by dog bites… dear Alexander must have been attacked and bitten many times.

To make matters worse, he had a chain around his neck, which is used to keep dogs on a chain outside at all times. He also had heart worm, for which treatment could be started almost immediately, because two anonymous donors immediately transferred the money (approx. 500 euros).

The vet sprayed his entire body and maggots literally came out of every nook and cranny. They were everywhere… in his wounds, anus, penis, ears. Alexander was really getting eaten alive. Seeing all those worms crawling out of his body was horrible, and the smell of those worms and his eaten wounds was horrible. For fear of life-threatening infections from those nasty worms, Alexander was immediately put on a very strong course of antibiotics. Of course Alexander could not be in a kennel. He was put in the heated room where we normally do the sterilisations and castrations and then we had to keep our fingers crossed that he would make it.

Being taken like that, in the car, to the vet, having to have blood taken and the fluid poured over his body to get the maggots out (which stings and hurts a lot) is of course very hard for a dog. Alexander did not give a kick. He cooperated 100%. It was really unprecedented.

This dog is very, very special and very social and friendly.

In the following months of July, August, September 2024 Alexander miraculously recovered completely. His wounds healed, he started his heartworm treatment (also a painful treatment that he endured without a fight) and he showed his personality: crazy about people, very social and friendly and very affectionate.

Everything went well with him. He gained weight well and enjoyed the extra attention he received. The dogs that have to be admitted to the sterilisation room need extra care, warmth and rest, but of course they have to be walked too. The volunteers walk the dogs twice a day and the dogs love their walks!

Unfortunately, other dogs came and there was no more room for Alexander. After more than 3 months of some extra attention, he had to go into a kennel. He is there alone, on a few square meters. Then all went wrong ... he does not get any individual attention in the kennels and he quickly became depressed. Although he has been declared healthy by the vet, he has already lost the kilos he gained, and he continues to lose weight.

This dog absolutely cannot live without people and really needs a loving home. In this video HERE you can see how sad he is. He truly wants to come out.

On October 22, 2024, they took him for a walk to take adoption photos. You can see in this video that he enjoys it, but the reality is that he can only come out of his kennel again when he is adopted.

ALEXANDER has now been in his kennel for 2 months and is only getting worse. We have made several videos of him. His rescue video got over 20,000 views, but we can't find a foster home for him.
